Life and Society:

Ingelmen are industrious, honest, thrifty, and orderly. They appreciate traits such as punctuality, privacy, intelligence, and skill. They have a strong sense of regional pride. Ingelmen appreciate intelligent conversation but may be wary of unfamiliar or different ideas. Many are prone to skepticism.

Many wear Lederhosen (leather pants), Dirndlkleider (dresses with gathered waists and full skirts, worn with an apron). Ingelmen are famous throughout Amareth for the quality of their beer, as well as the amount they can imbibe. This may be due in part to the high population of dwarves in Ingel.

It is courteous to stand when a woman enters the room, and more than one duel has been fought over a perceived insult to a female family member when this custom went unobserved. The father is head of the family, with the eldest brother taking over should the father be incapacitated. Unmarried women are expected to view the head of their families as the final decision makers, while married women are expected to behave the same way towards their husbands. That said, the women of Ingel are a sturdy lot, and though the men run the businesses, the women run the household. Though arranged marriages still occur, they are declining in popularity and tend to be reserved for the upper classes.

Children tend to be named for grandparents, with nicknames being used in their younger years. It is considered a mark of adulthood to be addressed by the proper name instead of a nickname. Godparents are chosen for a child when the child reaches the age of six weeks and is baptized. They are given the responsibility to raise the child should something happen to the parents. For this reason, orphans are rare. Those that do have no one to care for them are sent to rather bleak orphanages and usually enter the workhouses by age ten.

When a loved one dies, it is customary to plant trees or flowers in remembrance.
