Economy

Righnach is a communal, agricultural society, with its social and political structures based on the clan system. Each clan, or large family group, was a politically autonomous unit, although most combined to form larger tuatha, or regional kingdoms. Within each clan, land was owned communally, and periodically redistributed among the members according to rank and need. Most trade is simply barter. Righnach is rich in gold, silver, lead and iron.

Culture

They are light-skinned, with blue and gray eyes and red, blond, or light brown hair. They tend to be tall. Some men wear beards, others prefer just a mustache. Righnach women rarely cut their hair, whereas Righnach men rarely allow their hair to go beyond shoulder length. Many Righnach men cut their hair short and wash it in limewater to give it a spiky appearance. They generally wear long-sleeved shirts or tunics (usually in bright colors and richly embroidered) and long trousers called braccae or treibh. Over this was worn a cloak, or brat, fastened at one shoulder; light of weight in summer and of heavy fur or fabric in the winter. The cloaks were of striped or checked design, the checks being close together and in many colors. Clothes are made of wool or linen, with some silk being used by the rich. Mantles are also worn. Broaches and armlets are used but the most famous item of jewellery is the torc. The kilt is popular in Oriana. Many women wear what is known as a bog dress, or a long tunic with a mantle.

Both men and women take up the path of the sword in Righnach. The men train the women and the women train the men. Most of the famous training academies in Righnach are run by women.
Warriors often go naked into battle to spare their clothing. They often cover themselves with spiraling patterns in a blue stain called woad. It acts as a mood fixative and antiseptic astringent, so that they are fearless in combat and their wounds heal more readily. Before engaging in battle they sound unusually shaped horns, beat their swords on their shields and utter cries of astonishing fierceness in an effort to unnerve their enemies.
While some clans do cut off their enemies’ heads, they only do so to those they deemed worthy of the honor. Such heads are preserved in oil and kept in wooden boxes. However, sometimes they use them as drinking vessels.
Righnach invented the chariot.

Social Castes

The ceile, or 'free clansmen', are the basis of the Righnach social structure. They work a plot of land, pay taxes towards the community, and form the army in time of war. They also have political power, electing local assemblies to administer clan affairs.
Above the ceile are the flaith, or 'civil servant' class — public officials elected by the clan to carry out administrative duties. Their work includes the upkeep of roads, hospitals and public mills, along with policing and the organization of the army. They are controlled by the local assembly, and received a lifetime grant of land in return for their duties.

Above the flaith is the ruling class — the Chiefs, ranging in status from clan chiefs, through provincial 'kings', to the Ard Ri, or High King. Brehon law provided for the election to office of all Chiefs — the concept of 'hereditary power' is considered strange and abnormal. The function and powers of a chief are also limited by Brehon law — his role is not to make laws, but merely to uphold them. He acts as the president of clan assemblies, military commander in time of war, and supreme judge in the public courts.

Religion

Ranking above the flaith are the 'learned men' — the Druids, Bards, Brehons (Judges) and Healers. Membership of these professions is open to anyone willing and able to undertake the many years of rigorous training required. Righnach is the birthplace of the druidic order, and most of it's priests are tied to the order, even if they are not technically 'druids'. They act as religious ministers, political advisors, philosophers, historians and teachers.
Their art is a design-centered technique with zoomorphic emblems and representations. Rare is the village lacking a skilled bard to hand down the oral histories of Righnach.
